Interesting fact of the day: scan through the Webby winners and take note of the amount of either entirely Flash, or heavily Flash reliant sites. I am fascinated that there are still this many Flash sites out there, that they are still getting awards and that they would be completely useless on an iPhone/iPad.

Some of these I can’t stand, but some of them are brilliant. The thing I love about Gondry and Jonez, especially, is that their ads and music videos are almost always legitimate short films in and of themselves. It’s also astonishing that David Lynch directed a pregnancy test commercial. Did the producers not see Eraserhead??

“Artist, mother and taxpayer Jemima Burrill will stand mouth-bound, on a bucket from 12 - 1pm on Sat 15 May at Speakers’ Corner in protest of the lack of women in the cabinet, in the negotiations this week and in politics generally.

Women are 50% of the population and don’t have a voice.

She is inviting all those who are choked by this marginalisation to join her. Armed with a stepladder or soapbox, she is encouraging everyone to be a part of a demonstration where the voiceless can at least be seen if not heard.

There are more female MPs in parliament than any to date, at 22 percent of the total - a fourfold increase since 1987.

This is considered a success even though this is a smaller proportion than in Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan.

83% of the ‘experts’ cited on British news are men. This performance is a gut reaction to an unacceptable situation.

I started by wishing that the colours were richer and the image sharper, more contrasty. The humanity of it blew all that away. As so often with great lumières, it succeeds in spite of (because of?) the mundanity of its subject and photography. Three things about it that I love: the silence of the bagpipes; the way we get to spy on people’s reactions (the men all look at him, the women all ignore him); the lads, obviously, and the tension of their passing, checking him out, and returning.
